So What Else Team Spotlight: Sean Bolden

Team Spotlight: Sean Bolden

Montgomery County Hunger Relief Program Coordinator

Sean Bolden has grown up alongside So What Else.

At just 12 years old, Sean joined the So What Else youth program at Rockville Housing in Rockville, Maryland. There, he found more than after-school activities. He discovered an interest in computers, connected with supportive mentors, and became part of a community that encouraged him to learn, grow, and believe in what was possible.

As Sean entered high school, he stayed connected to the organization. This time, he returned as a volunteer, helping support many of the same programs and activities that had shaped his own childhood.

His dedication and strong work ethic quickly stood out. In 2023, Sean officially joined the So What Else team as a Youth Program Assistant, giving back to the young people coming through the program after him.

Growing Into a New Role

In September 2025, Sean expanded his involvement through the Maryland Corps Service Year program. He began supporting warehouse operations at the Montgomery County Food Rescue Bank, where he learned the behind-the-scenes work required to rescue, organize, and distribute food throughout the community.

Sean embraced the opportunity to build new skills and take on greater responsibility. He recently earned his forklift certification and is working toward receiving his driver’s license so he can contribute further as a food rescue driver.

Today, at just 21 years old, Sean proudly serves as a Hunger Relief Program Coordinator. Working alongside a dedicated team, he helps ensure food reaches partners, individuals, and families across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.

Paying It Forward

Sean’s journey reflects the heart of the So What Else mission.

He began as a young person looking for a safe and supportive place to learn. He returned as a volunteer, grew into a staff member, and is now helping lead work that supports thousands of people throughout the region.

From participant to volunteer to leader, Sean continues to give back to the community that helped shape him.

His story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when young people are given opportunity, encouragement, and a place to belong. It also shows how one person’s experience of being supported can grow into a lifelong commitment to helping others.
