{"id":5177,"date":"2024-12-19T17:48:11","date_gmt":"2024-12-19T17:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sowhatelse.org\/staging\/1792\/?page_id=5177"},"modified":"2024-12-23T19:12:44","modified_gmt":"2024-12-23T19:12:44","slug":"who-we-are","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sowhatelse.org\/staging\/1792\/who-we-are\/","title":{"rendered":"Who We Are"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So What Else (SWE) is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">501c(3) organization that strengthens the Baltimore-Washington Metro area by providing hunger relief services and innovative youth programming and service-learning enrichment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thousands of children are left alone, unsupervised and without access to healthy food during out-of-school time hours.\u00a0 COVID-19 amplified this problem, putting many children and families from low-income communities at risk for experiencing hunger and food insecurity. To address these problems, SWE provides a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tripod of services to children and families from low-income households.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a title=\"Montgomery County Chapter\" href=\"https:\/\/sowhatelse.org\/staging\/1792\/food-rescue-bank\/montgomery-county-services\/\"><b>Emergency Hunger Relief.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SWE is one of the largest hunger relief agencies in the Greater Washington Area with the most \u201copen walk-up hours\u2019 of any pantry in MD. SWE is also the largest provider of free basic necessities, including diapers, clothing, and school supplies.\u00a0 Our food rescue bank <\/span><b>rescues and distributes 300,000 pounds of food<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and thousands of basic necessities to <\/span><b>24,000 individuals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per week through over <\/span><b>150 sites<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We are creating food security by redirecting <\/span><b>45 million pounds of rescued food<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from entering landfills, into the hands of food insecure populations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a title=\"Youth Programming\" href=\"https:\/\/sowhatelse.org\/staging\/1792\/youth-programming\/\"><b>Youth Development.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SWE\u2019s <\/span><b>102 in-person after school programs and summer camps<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provide students safety, food security, and positive mentorship for students out-of-school time. Our diverse curriculum fosters academic achievement, inspires community engagement, teaches teamwork and empathy, nurtures a healthy lifestyle, engenders a sense of well-being and self-efficacy, and promotes environmental stewardship. Our programs serve <\/span><b>3,150 children per year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across <\/span><b>55 need-based communities.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a title=\"Volunteer\" href=\"https:\/\/sowhatelse.org\/staging\/1792\/volunteer\/\"><b>Volunteer Opportunities.<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SWE is a service-based organization, that models and inspires community service in others.\u00a0 SWE is a conduit for individuals to \u2018pay it forward\u2019 in their own communities.
